I was reading a book to my son called “Amazing Battles” part of the LEGO Super Heroes Comics. The story began by introducing three heroes with “amazing abilities that help them in their quest to keep the world safe”.
Within the description
What intrigued me, was their description of superman, “superman hides his superpowers by having another identity” and further still “no one knows that superman and Clark Kent are secretly the same person”.
I immediately started thinking about how true this is, in real life, about the way we actually live in the real world.
The bible tells us in Genesis chapter 1 verse 27:
“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (MEV).
All human beings have been created in the very image of God but we do not live our lives in the fullness of the identity God has given us. People are living without accessing and utilising the “amazing abilities” God has given them.
Now stay with me, I am not talking about flying in the air or having laser eyes or even wearing costumes. I am talking about God’s original plan for man to have dominion over the earth, without sickness, in righteousness, perfect innocence and in communion with God, Our Creator.
The bible says those who are in Christ, are new creations and the old has passed away – 2 Corinthians 5:17. Yes, in the world today, we have access to advanced technology, we can achieve great things in business, physically, socially and financially but there is a hidden element of our identity. Our spiritual reality and awareness which aligns us with the Holy Spirit of God and the desire and longing to do the will of God.
As I read the story to my son, I thought about who we are in Christ, the ones sent forth into all the world to preach the Good News of the Gospel, to heal the sick, give sight to the blind and raise the dead but only a few Christians can actually say, “Yes, God is operating through me in this powerful, miraculous way to save the lost in the world.
Those who have not heard, seen or been told about Jesus Christ or given the opportunity to receive Him in their heart and give their lives to Him, are the lost in the world. The ones praying for God to send them a hero - the body of Jesus Christ, The Church.
What is it that hides our “in Christ identity”?
What is preventing us from taking our masks off to reveal Jesus Christ to the world? Why are we not saving the world through our daily lives? I believe we hold on to the old nature and allow the religious living to hinder our growth in being transformed into the new and original nature God intended - JESUS.
As I pondered on this even further, I came across Ephesians chapter 4, which talks about our old and new life. Verses 21 to 24 speaks about the new nature we receive in Christ, it says
“if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off the former way of life in the old nature, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that you put on the new nature, which was created according to God in righteousness and true holiness.” (MEV)
Further on in verses 30 to 32, it reads,
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you are sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outbursts, and blasphemies, with all malice, be taken away from you. And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.” (MEV)
It becomes clear as Christians, our new nature requires not living two identities like superman in the story but living one identity in Jesus Christ.
To live this new nature requires a relationship with the Holy Spirit, having and maintaining a pure heart, receiving and walking in the love of God in every area of our lives and in every role He has positioned us for His glory, purpose and will.
When we are confused about who we are, we cannot be true to who He says we are. It is time to stop thinking and wondering who we are. It is time to KNOW and BE who He says we are because He said it, we are as He says.
So be. Be who He says YOU are.
Father, help us live fully in our new nature in Jesus Christ and help us to completely put away our old nature by sealing us in Your Holy Spirit. We ask for more of Your nature and love to be a hero to the world like Jesus our Saviour. Help us to walk like Him, make us be more like Jesus and bring Your Kingdom on earth.
We ask for the same grace by which we have been saved through faith, and not of ourselves, a gift of God, not of works, for those who are lost in the world. Father, we ask You to touch their hearts, for they are Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which You prepared beforehand in Jesus name, amen. (Ephesians 2: 8-9 MEV)
