With everything we see happening around us, it is difficult not to be concerned. Let me be clear, I am concerned but I refused to be distracted and choose to focus on the heart of God.
I am concerned and troubled especially for the next generation, our young people.
I am concerned and troubled about the amount of trauma each individual is being exposed to.
I am concerned and troubled by what is being used to drive, motivate and manipulate millions.
First, disease, fear, anxiety and death caused the world to be locked indoors and now racism, injustice, hatred, fear and death are being used to force us out. I really don't want to speak on the videos and images around the world. They seem to focus on fuelling the wrong message. I am grateful however for those sending a message of hope, forgiveness and solidarity.
I want to speak mainly about our hearts, as we continue to be fed an overwhelming about of information depicting anger and rage.
How will the level of trauma coming from every direction affect each life? We cannot measure at this moment the impact of it all but therein lies my concern, for the eye is the window to our soul and we live from what lies hidden within it.
The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light. But if your eye is unsound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the very light in you [your conscience] is darkened, how dense is that darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in).
- Matthew 5:22-24 (AMPC)
What are we seeing and how are we guarding our hearts against the negative and destructive emotions, thoughts and motivations - like anger, violence, disdain, division, deception and so much more.
We must speak and be a voice for the voiceless and stand up for what is wrong definitely but we must also invite the Holy Spirit, living in and through us as children of God to be a healing balm to the broken.
Open your mouth for the dumb [those unable to speak for themselves], for the rights of all who are left desolate and defenseless; Open your mouth, judge righteously, and administer justice for the poor and needy.
- Proverbs 31:8-9 (AMPC)
Many have been broken by the injustice of racism and the effects of COVID-19, yes, two completely different things but they are the storms which are loud and deafening in this time and season.
What do we do to turn the tides of this storm?
When hatred and ignorance are stimulated by fear it breeds injustice and death as we see in the trending news of the deaths of innocent black people in America, and many historical events around the world.
What is exposed is the true state of many hearts and the wickedness that influences those infected hearts.
Wickedness takes different forms but that wickedness is displayed in and through people.
But what I want to draw your attention to right now at this moment, is when evil and weakness spews out we must release love, truth, righteousness, worship and peace to penetrate and break its hold and effect on the earth.
I read this statement which said, "no man is free until all men are free". Fannie Lou Hamer said it this way, "Nobody's free until everybody's free". Hmmm, a powerful message of empowerment but does it point to an attainable reality.
My heart bleeds at the injustice against the African American men and women who have been killed because of the colour of their skin. But the truth is, a man can only be free when he accepts the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Freedom goes far deeper than the exterior of what the world presents it to be. There is a greater battle and what we are seeing unravel right in front of our eyes is a demonstration of the magnitude of that hidden reality.
You have a choice. Make it! Or continue to live in bondage.
Justice goes hand in hand with righteousness.
Remember after we fight to be heard, how exactly are we saying we want change to look:
Will we as black people choose to support each other more?
Will the issues of ethnicity and tribalism be ignored? Or are they more trivial?
Will we humble ourselves and sacrifice for each other genuinely?
Will we support our leaders and unify as a community to change policy and take a stand in politics?
Will families invest in families and build stronger foundations?
What will be our strategy for moving forward in change before we are blindsided by another trending devastation?
Choose to spread more positive messages, the truth in God’s Word, solutions and strategies; send that out into the World to penetrate the chaos.
Choose to be united not divided in taking action.
Start having the conversations that have been ignored, avoided and feared for generations.
Use what you have to educate and spread hope - we all have family, friends, colleagues etc, our network and connections, those around us whom we can begin to join with to change the narrative.
Be better positioned to be a part of the decision-making process especially where laws and policies are being established.
Change requires a transformation of our hearts.
Let us start having the conversations which will inspire the change we want to see and live. Let us stop being afraid to confront the issues we know are real but deny how real they are because it hasn't become a global issue yet?
Choose to start with you. Be a better citizen on the earth and spread more hope and love where ever you find yourself. Use your voice but let your life back it up - don't be hypocritical!
There is much work to be done and we all have a part to play.
God’s lens is love and His love to and for us is JESUS
Remember, we continue to live in this world and must be intentional about protecting our hearts, our children and our future for all people. For God created all humanity, and race although very real is a lens which we individually choose to see or not see through.
Let us change the narrative! Be the change, check your heart and be a solution.
For someone to harm or kill another human being reveals the darkness and wickedness in their heart.
We must always remain in the position of asking God who is Creator of all, "what are you saying at this moment and what will You have us do, Father?
Take your eyes off the outward appearance of what is happening in the world. Focus your heart and sight on Jesus who has paid the price with His blood.
Substance over appearance is vital for our future - for there are man’s ways yet higher still are God’s ways.
The future requires keeping our eyes and hearts fixed on what God is doing and from His Presence we receive the wisdom on how we are to respond. We are in the midst of great change, that only Holy Spirit can usher us in and through.
Protect your heart and eyes.
